Relief interventions and preparedness for Cyclone Ockhi in Kanyakumari
and Cyclone Gaja in Nagapattinam Districts of Tamil Nadu

Ockhi Cyclone Response

The cyclone formed in the North Indian Ocean named Ockhi and crossed Kanyakumari with wind speed 100–150 kmph on November 29–30, 2017, causing severe damage to life and livelihood.

Early Warning: Messages were broadcasted to coastal communities through NGOs affiliated with Social Action Movement and Inter Agency Group (IAG).

Rapid Assessment & Immediate Needs: Conducted jointly by RUC and IAG members, covering the damages and requirements of victims.

Relief Intervention: 463 farmers received horticulture seedlings, 107 tribal families received household utensils, and 43 victims with damaged houses received roofing materials.

Heavy winds of about 140–160 kmph speed were experienced on November 16, 2018. The affected districts were Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Pudukottai, Karaikal, Trichy, and Ramanathapuram.

Early Warning: Messages disseminated through NGOs affiliated with Social Action Movement and IAG.

Rapid Assessment & Immediate Needs: Conducted by RUC and IAG in affected districts to assess damages and coordinate response.

Relief Materials & Distribution

Household utensils including cooking pots, steel plates, steel cups, water carriers, sempu, steel spoons, sari, lungi, bed sheet, and mats were distributed to 950 most affected families from Dec 11–17, 2018.

Conclusion

The beneficiaries and their representatives were actively involved in the selection of beneficiaries, relief materials, logistics, storage, distribution, and grievance redressal. Local leaders and officials collaborated to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the relief operations.
